When I picked up Call of Duty: Ghosts for my Xbox 360, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Would it be just another Call of Duty game? Or would it offer a truly next gen experience? I like Call of Duty, and I’m generally happy getting more of the same, but I was really hoping for some innovation this time around.
Unfortunately, there’s nothing that feels particularly next gen about Call of Duty: Ghosts. Maybe it’s the console I was playing on, but it actually felt like a bit of a step back from Black Ops 2. There were some nice innovations, like the way the game expands upon the Pick 10 system, but there were also ways in which the game regressed.
Black Ops 2′s branching storyline wasn’t perfect, but it was exciting. I saw it as the future of the series, but apparently Infinity Ward didn’t feel the same. The single player campaign in Call of Duty: Ghosts feels really tacked on, and it definitely isn’t as good as the single player in Battlefield 4.
Of course, gameplay is the real reason people play Call of Duty games. The reason the series has been so successful for so long is because the gameplay is always really polished and really fun. There may be not much in the way of innovation in this game, but it’s still very entertaining to play.
There are a few attempts at innovation other players may enjoy more than me. In addition to the standard single player and multiplayer modes, there’s a new mode called Squads. This gives players the chance to build their own team of characters and play with them in a multiplayer style scenario. I thought it was a neat idea in theory, but kind of dull in practice. However, I bet players who are interested in team building will get a lot more out of this mode than I did.
What I really liked about Ghosts was how many options there were for cooperative multiplayer. I find that the caliber of players I encounter in co-op modes is much higher than the players I see in competitive modes, and I was glad to have so many options. I especially liked Extinction, which is sort of a new take on Black Op 2′s Zombies mode. It has you fighting off waves of monsters alongside three other players.
If you’re looking for a competitive challenge, the Grind mode is a must play. It’s similar to Kill Confirmed, but has you depositing dog tags into banks after you collect them. It’s a lot harder than it sounds, and it really gives you a sense of accomplishment when you manage to drop off those dog tags without getting killed. This is due to the feature known as Player ID, which was added last year and improved greatly in the new addition. If you are new to PES, the first few rounds will end up in frustration because of wayward shots and missing passes of the ball. But, with time you will improve the game tremendously. You will connect the ball with good passes and throws. This will help you to win matches, and the sense of reward you get through it is what makes the PES 2014 a fantastic soccer game.
Komani has spent a lot of time in improving the graphical outlook and the game-play in the 2014 release. The Master League is still around, and you can manage a national team in this mode. There are other major competitions such as the Champions league, Europa cup and the Asian Champions league, which looks great in the 2014 version. The new engine has made the game absolutely gorgeous, and the PES 2014 can easily be the best football game to be released so far. The grass on the field and the colorful boot of the player is executed in such a way that player likeliness is improved tremendously. A sudden frame-rate drop can be observed when the action get hectic, and this can be attributed to the powerfulness of the engine.
The menu is the area that hasn’t seen any improvement in the whole game. The navigate menu system is not up to the mark. It is really a pain in the neck and should be improved at least in the next version. Getting into a match seems to take ages. The PES 2014 offers a multiplayer option. There are excellent multi controller set ups and online matches with a ranking system, and a matchmaking feature that will help you to find your suitable opponents. These are great additions to the online feature in the 2014 version.
